Self Love Song Writing
This month I’m sharing a mini song writing map. This worksheet can be used in lessons or as a homework assignment for your students. The goal of this worksheet is to use different musical elements/concepts learned in lessons (i.e. notation, rhythm, harmony, mood, dynamics, etc.) to create a song of their own. There is also a fill in the blank opportunity to add lyrics about what your student loves about themselves as an added “just-for-fun” slash “all-our-students-are-worthy-and-deserving-of-love-so-let’s-add-more-space-for-that-wherever-we-can.”

How it Works:
Although the directions are included in the worksheet, I encourage you to make it your own depending on your student. There are two brainstorming boxes: one for lyrics and one for musical elements. Depending on your student’s level, focus on different musical elements. If they are a beginner, maybe focus on only notation and rhythm. If they are more advanced, maybe have them play around with different modes, forms, harmonies, etc.
“What do you like about yourself?” is a tough question. One that many students (and teachers… and anyone else?) really struggle to answer. That is okay. If this is the case for your student, try breaking it down, or reframing it in ways that may be more emotionally accessible. Perhaps you instead ask questions like:
“What has been your favorite compliment you’ve received?”
“If you were *a friend/family member/other important person in student’s life* how would you describe yourself?”
“What’s something you are good at?”
“What’s something you like to do?”
“I like (model your own example) about myself. What’s something you like about yourself?”
“How are you gentle with yourself?”
Closing:
I hope this worksheet is a fun creative opportunity for you and your students, and I hope you have some empowering discussions/moments of self love- both you and your students.
